GigaPan Workshop at Point Park University

Adam Flanagan, a Point Park University photography student, shows his enthusiasm for the GigaPan robot during a recent workshop with Carnegie Mellon University’s CREATE Lab Dror Yaron.

Yaron is spearheading a movement to use the GigaPan as a tool of reportage through the use of notes and snapshots on the GigaPan website. The notes would contain full text stories relating to the subject of the snapshot.

Flanagan said one of his ideas would be to GigaPan photograph a graveyard and compile stories about the lives of the soul who rest there.

CMU Mod Snake

CMU Mod Snake, originally uploaded by StartPoint Media.

Mathew Tesch, a Carnegie Mellon University PhD student in the Biorobotics Laboratory, shows off the modular snake during the Carnegie Mellon in the Community: Technology open house at Newell Simon Hall Friday, March 6, 2009. Tesch said this version of the "mod snake" has a camera installed at the head and is hard wired to preserve batteries but can operate wirelessly and remotely in very small and narrow spaces.

After speaking to Tesch, I am very interested in seeing some of the photographs they take with the mod snake. I’ve got a few ideas I’d like to try if they’d give me a couple of hours with the snake camera.

Andrei Pidkivka

Last Friday I covered an ethnic flute performance by Andrei Pidkivka at the Father Ryan Arts center in McKees Rocks.

I compiled this piece using natural sound collected at the event. One challenge in this regard is to eliminate the sound of the camera shutter. This means each segment of the video must be well thought out and organized before photography begins. Portions of the show dedicated need to be dedicated to each medium collected or the sound must otherwise diminished through the use of a camera muffler. Seems to me an added feature to digital SLR’s should be a shutter silence feature.
