A Quick One Minute Tour

Earlier this week the finishing touches were added to my exhibition Our State Park:Western Pennsylvania. The exhibition is being held at the Photo Forum Fine Art Gallery which is located in the USX Tower upper lobby. It will remain in the space until mid-June 2009.

The Photo Forum Gallery is coordinated by Eric Mendolson. Some of the other artists Photo Forum has feature are Harold Edgerton, Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol, Jerry Uelsman and Imogen Cunningham to name a few.

It is a great honor for me to display in the same forum as these photography greats and I am honored that Eric thought highly enough of my project to display in this noted space.

I’d also like to thank Tim Fabian for introducing me to Mendolson.

This multimedia piece was created with still imagery captured with a Canon G9. The RAW images were processed to TIFF’s using Adobe Camera Raw.

The video was captured with a Flip Video unit. The original AVI file must be converted to a MOV file, or something else compatable, before editing can begin in Adobe Premiere. A123 AVI to WMV DVD MPEG MP4 MOV Converter was used to complete the conversion. Individual video segments were limited to five seconds through Time/Duration tool.

The audio was captured with the Flip. The clip was unlinked from the video and Adobe Premiere was used to edit the dead air out resulting in a time compressed audio track.

Dror Yaron, Outreach Coordinator for Carnegie Mellon University’s CREATE Lab, is conducting a GigaPan workshop focused on using the robotic imaging system as a tool of reportage. Yaron has partnered with students from the Point Park University Digital Photographic Editing course. The students have been capturing, stitching and uploading imagery to the GigaPan website. Once uploaded the students take virtual snapshots of elements within the picture. Those snapshots are then researched and reported upon. The stories become an embedded part of the snapshot and are read within the GigaPan web interface. The students Gigapan images and reporting can be seen here .

The Americans

Robert Frank’s images of America are rich with content. He his masterful with visual symbolism. His work is a positive representation of the American people and spirit, though when it was released it was viewed as anything but positive in light of the mood of nation at the time. His book, The Americans was published first in France in 1958, then one year later in the United States. The images Frank made in 1955 and 1956 are considered by some to be the most important defining images since World War II. The exhibition celebrates the 50th anniversary of the book and is on display in Washington D.C. at the National Gallery West Building. The 83 images are presented in the order established by the book.
